Welcome to my monthly income report for July 2017.
Not only was I able to make money online, I also did it whilst I was unwell for the last couple of weeks. (One of the reasons for the lateness of this post)
Being unwell and stuck in bed only goes to prove why I want to make passive income online. Not only do I want to be able to work from home, but I don’t want to have to worry about trading time for money.
Anyways….enough about my ill health, here are the details on what I’ve been doing online, what I’ve learnt, and what I’ll be doing going forward.
Please note that I am an affiliate to some of the products. This means if you click on the link and purchase the item, then I will receive an affiliate commission (at no additional cost to you). I only ever recommend things I have used and that I believe are helpful and useful.
But first, why am I producing these income reports?
My reason for publishing an income report is three-fold.
Firstly, I want to be able to show you what is going on behind the scenes in my online business and how I’m working towards a steady income online. I want to show you how I’m doing it in the hope that it will inspire you to do the same.
Secondly, I want to be able to keep a track of my finances, and see which steps have created the best results. This way I can learn from it and you can to.
Thirdly, it will give me the motivation to keep going and exploring new options. It’s only when we are accountable that we really push ourselves!
As I mentioned, this is my first income report. However, you can take a look at my blogging report I did in June of this year, which was the catalysts for this, and which explains where I’m going with my blog.
If you are interested in starting a blog for yourself in order to make passive income online, I wrote a step-by-step guide to setting up a website.
Starting a blog and making money from it, is intrinsically linked to traffic, so I will be talking about both in my report. So let’s get going…
This is for money made in the month of July, but not necessarily paid into my bank account.
- CreateSpace royalties for my Inspirational Quotes Adult Colouring Book = £50.34
- Google Adsense = £0.05
- Amazon Affiliates = £0.90
Total Earnings = £51.29
- Emails (Convertkit)– £23.03
- Hosting + Domain (Bluehost) LINK – £0 – this was paid in full in April 2017 for a total of 1 year, therefore I will not include this in the expenses here. (Check out my tutorial on how to start a blog)
NET PROFIT: £28.26
Proof Of Income
Here is a snapshot of my income on CreateSpace.
Although I didn’t get much traction with ads and affiliates, it still good to see some pennies in there.
What Went Well
My colouring book has been a labour of love for the last 6 months.
It started off as an idea whilst I was talking with my friend Sara, and this eventually transpired into a self-published book that is now available on Amazon.
The colouring book is for adults and is centred around inspirational quotes, feathered friends and flora. I drew all the illustrations with pencil and ink, and then digitised them.
I’m so happy the way the book turned out and I’ve already had some really positive feedback on it.
The sales of the book have come a variety of ways, however I would generally break it down into the following:
- Word of mouth (friends and family)
- Adding onto my website
- Promoting through social media
If you are interested in buying the book, you can have a look at it here on Amazon.
When I posted my blogging report in June, I recorded my social media stats.
I have to admit that I have made little progress with social media, as you can see from the figures below. However there are things that I have put in place this month which I know will enable my brand to be stronger for when I do focus on social media.
Social Media Stats:
- Facebook SYL Page – 530 likes (no change)
- Twitter (@lisajacksonSYL) – 450 followers (-24)
- Instagram Personal (@lisajacksonsyl) – 138 followers (no change)
- Instagram Business (@superstar_your_life) – 25 followers (no change)
- Pinterest (@lisajacksonsyl) – 26 followers (+1)
- YouTube – 37 followers (no change)
What I Focused On This Month
I had three main goals for July which I focused on.
Goal 1: Earn at least £100 from my blog, to include advertising, affiliates, and/or my own products
Although I didn’t achieve £100 from my online business, I am really pleased with the progress I am making.
I actually made some money from ads and affiliates, although it was pennies, however I know that this could turn into something great, so I am looking forward to that.
Goal 2: Post on my blog at least 3 times on new topics including minimalism, travel and saving money
I wrote and published the following posts, although I have yet to do a travel one:
- How to Declutter Your Life And Be Less Stressed
- How I’ve Saved £5000 By Colouring This In
- 20 Self-Care Ideas For A Better Life
Goal 3: Increase my Pinterest marketing efforts and have 100+ followers
I haven’t made a mark on my Pinterest followers yet, however I have set up my profile and board so that I have the best possible start.
I have taken the time to concentrate on optimising my board with great pins and images, so that when I do start getting traffic, people will want to pin and follow.
The main sources of guidance for growing Pinterest, was from the podcast ‘The Side Hustle Show’ Episode 142, by Nick Loper. In the show, Loper talks with Rosemarie Groner from The Busy Budgeter about how she has uses Pinterest to grow her traffic and her blog. (She currently has 91,258 followers).
I listened to the show about 5 times, before downloading the show notes and following the action points and best practices.
I carried out the following:
- Made sure my Pinterest account was a Pinterest business account
- Set up at least 10 boards with at least 10 pins each
- Made sure I change the board cover photos to appealing images
- Created a ‘Best Of SuperstarYourLife’ board with all my blog posts
- Created ‘pinnable’ graphics for each blog post
- Added a Pinterest button to my blog
- Joined 2 Group boards
You can check out the results of this on my Pinterest account here. Be sure to follow me as well!
Overall, I am happy with the progress I have made with Pinterest, and I will continue to concentrate on this platform to increase traffic to my blog.
Goal 4: Increase page views on my website (to beat 303 views)
This was a no-go area! Definitely something I need to work on but I know it will come with consistent action.
What Have I Learnt
I am in a great position to have a number of products already created for my blog, however, I know that traffic is the most important thing I need to concentrate on right now. I need to get my blog in front of more people. Pinterest is going to be my ONE THING – the social media that I concentrate on and grow.
I’ve also realised that I will need to be more structured in my time. Having a full time job and travelling to and from work takes an enormous amount of time out of the day, but I know that people do find the time. They carve it out of their day and make it work.
Goals For August
- Write 3-4 detailed blog posts
- Pin every day on Pinterest and grow my followers to 100+
- Send a newsletter to my subscribers every Monday
I haven’t stated an income goal this month. The reason for this is because I want to concentrate on my traffic and engagement. I believe that sales will happen naturally when my traffic increases.
So, lots to do this month, and hopefully I will keep healthy and well!
Till next time,
